How does a baby’s gut flora grow? What factors influence this process? And when can probiotics help? This particular period is studied extensively: it is perhaps the most rapidly developing field within gut flora science. In this talk, I will share with you the latest scientific findings, in human language and directly applicable within your daily reality.
An adult intestinal flora counts 40 trillion bacteria. That of the unborn child counts zero. During birth, the child is flooded with bacteria for the first time. But it will take years until she develops her own unique gut flora.
This maturation of the gut flora occurs in constant interaction with the immune system and brain development. Scientists talk about an early window of opportunity: a period when gut bacteria can do a lot for a child’s health – even later in life.
In this talk, I will reflect on the main factors that can influence the maturation process: birth, (breast) feeding, anti- and probiotics….
What previous attendees find powerful about this talk:
‘The scientific foundation, the opportunity for interaction, the gentleness with which it was brought.’
‘Overview – putting into perspective – giving a sense of the complexities and uncertainties, yet good tools for one’s own practice and above all: supportive and very empathetic, thoughtful attitude.’
‘Expertise and scientific approach. And then still able to explain this in plain language and using clear diagrams. Very professional.’
